About this week....

Compress and visualize

On Monday we had a guest speaker,

Digi People is a company that specializes in creating a visual content, whether that is TV advertising, video, animation in 2D and 3D and infographics. The Digi People studio is located at Lauttasaari and it has 11 employees at the moment. At the end of the lecture, we were given a task which was, to write and create a synopsis and a moodboard. A mood board is a type of collage consisting of images, text, and samples of objects in a composition. A synopsis is a brief summary of the major points of a subject or written work or story.

We created a short commercial for Finnair. We came

up with a punchline for the commercial which was

"Heart is home" Check out the video! :)

Also on that same lecture on Monday, Pekka showed us a very interesting short video. It was a lecture by Simon Sinek, who is a British/American author, motivational speaker and marketing consultant. The speech was based on

"How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action." Simon has also written a book about this topic and the book was awarded the "Best seller 2009" award.

The Golden circle

1. WHY

2. HOW

3. WHAT

To be a successful business or a leader you must start with the WHY?

People often make a mistake on this part and start with the WHAT instead.

Simon made very good points about this and gave some excellent examples.

For instance;

Why is Apple so innovative?

Why is it that Martin Luther king led the civil rights movement?

Why is it that the Wright Brothers were able to figure out controlled powered man flight?

These three mentioned above started their journey with the question WHY, which has lead them to succeed and reach their goal.

People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.

Simon gave an example about this, he said that 200 000 people showed up to hear

Dr. Luther King to speak. However there were no invitations sent, and there was no website to check the date of the speech, no additional information was actually provided.

So how did they do this?

He had a gift, he didn’t go around to tell people what needed to be changed in America. He told people that he BELIEVED. I believe I believe I believe, he said. People who believed what he believed, took his cause and made it their own. And they told people about this. People told one another about this speech that was about to happen. ’WORD OF MOUTH

For Dr. King the civil rights movement was the perfect thing to help him to bring his cause to life. Because he answered the question WHY.

There are leaders, and those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power but those who lead inspire us. Those who start with the ”why” have the ability to inspire those around them or find others who inspire them.

Thursday......

Anna Ikonen & Ronja Salmi

Uhm.... I can't think of a heading

So on this day we had a different guest speaker. Ronja Salmi who is a very well established young lady. She is a writer and a TV-host, she basically told us about herself and what she does in a nutshell.

Okay so to be brutally honest... This lecture didn't interest me at all and I barely remember much about it. I mean yeah it was nice to hear about her life and stuff. Weirdest thing to me was the fact that she was emphasizing that she didn't need school, she didn't get her degree, she made it without all that. Whereas we are sitting there in the small auditorium, as degree students, listening to her in somewhat discourage us almost. I'm sure this wasn't her purpose but that's how it came across, well to me at least. Maybe to some of the students it was amazing to listen to her telling us about how she 'made it', but I wasn't madly eager to hear about it. Please don't get me wrong, I am 100% sure that she worked her ass off to be where she's at today.

But there was of course things that was interesting about her speech, and one good thing that I do remember was that she mentioned about writing. As this is one of her specialties, she told us when we are writing we should first, plan it, write it and then edit it.

We're not supposed to write and edit at the same time. You should first WRITE WRITE WRITE. Keep going, don't worry about the grammar or spelling mistakes. The longer you keep on going and writing the better flow you'll have and you will be in your zone. Thoughts after thoughts. After the writing is done, then you can start editing and correcting whatever mistakes need to be corrected. Also Ronja was telling us how essential it is to be brave and to have courage, when in work or even life in general.

After Ronja's lecture, our digi coaches Salla and Sakari gave us a small task which was, to write a personal onepager, and then in teams to write a onepager together.

This week was alright, Monday was really pretty cool and I really find Simon Sinek to be an interesting person. I probably should read his books because that dude clearly knows what he is talking about.

Aaalright guys. It was fun as always, see you next week!!

PEACE :D
